Recap: Evening Hike on the James

Article by Kelly Drewnowski, Southeast Regional Coordinator

On Tuesday, May 24, nine women and young girls gathered near the Pony Pasture rapids in Richmond, Virginia to spend the evening exploring together.  After what felt like 40 days and 40 nights of rain, an evening hike along the James River with the ladies of SheJumps was the perfect way to finally get outside!

The young girls had a great time running and exploring the woods. Having only 12 out of 31 days in May without rain had given everyone a bit of cabin fever.  Needless to say they were ready to get out!

The ladies were good sports as we had to alter the route at times to avoid huge pools of water. A little mud didn’t scare the SheJumpers as they were all smiles jumping over and through the mud!

The James River, slightly flooded from all of the recent rainfall, prevented us from being able to explore all of the neat rocks. A lifejacket restriction was in place due to the increased danger, so we kept our feet on dry, or muddy land.

We took our time checking out the woods, wetlands and banks of the majestic James. There are so many cool places to explore in the park it was hard to stay on the path!

The evening hike was a refreshing way to finally be able to get outside after what went down as the wettest May on record in Richmond. Unseasonably cool temperatures and a whopping 9.79” of rain made this a May to remember with over five inches of rainfall during the first week alone.

After we completed the 3.2 mile loop hike along the winding trails around Pony Pasture we wondering down to the rapids to watch the beautiful sunset over the flowing river. It was great to get have several mothers, daughters and friends join us for another outdoor adventure in the Southeast.

What a gorgeous way to finish out the evening together! It is so rewarding to see ladies get outside together and experiencing all that Mother Nature has to offer. Thanks to everyone for coming out, we can’t wait for our next adventure!

Thanks to our national partners everyone took home EcoLips lip balm and pour overs from Little Red Wagon Coffee Roasters. We are super grateful to everyone for the support they have given SheJumps and all events in the Southeast! We couldn’t do it without you!
