Recap: GTGO Pure Give Community Class

Written by: Samantha Bild

On March 26th, we kicked off a new year of jumping with our first Get the Girls Out event of 2015 in Tennessee. Ladies from all over Knoxville showed up to support a great cause and see what the buzz about Barre was all about.

Lauren and Lindsey, owners at Pure Barre Knoxville, were on board with our mission and opened their doors for a donation based Pure Give community class – benefiting SheJumps. Something we spoke about is how so many women have the drive to get outdoors and try new sports but are often limited by the grind of an 8-5 desk job. Staying in shape during the week makes our weekend adventures possible, and Barre is a great hour-long workout to keep your body active and in shape.

Our instructor Sara was amazing. New sports can be intimidating, but she made new participants (like myself) feel welcome. She also provided extra instruction for those new to Barre terminology and positions. We started the class with breathing, stretching, and a moderate warm up. The class then heated up with strength training targeting hips, thighs, seat, abdominals and arms. Each section was followed by stretching to lengthen and sooth your muscles.

Before attending this class, I thought Barre was kind of like yoga. Easy going, focused on breathing, namaste. I was wrong. Despite my outdoor prowess, my butt was thoroughly kicked by Barre. The days following this class felt similar to my first few days training to be a raft guide. Muscles were sore in places I didn’t think existed. Despite the burn, this class was really low-impact. I’m going to stick with Barre so that I can get out and climb, mountain bike and paddle harder.

By the time class was out, a storm was brewing over Knoxville, so we were unable to hit the beer garden next door. Despite the weather, we had a great time getting to know some new girls in Knoxville and introducing them to SheJumps. After class, we munched on Kate’s bars and talked about ideas for new adventures in the Southeast.

Overall, this GTGO event was a great time with good company. Thanks to the Pure Barre Knoxville staff for making this event possible. We hope to partner with you again in the future!
