On August 20th SheJumps Northeast took its first try at fly fishing. It was the perfect day, hot but no wind and not too humid for once! As the northeast team we are always looking for new education events to reach more and more women. Fly fishing was one of those that really jumped out to us as a great way to more women to try something they have always wanted but just never had the chance.
We were lucky to have Walt Geryk of Spey Doctor come out to help us learn the basics from how to set up a rod to learning to cast. We were all set up with amazing Fenwick fly rods. It was a lot harder then I thought it would be! He made it look so simple and beautiful while many of us were catching bushes and landing the fly near our feet! (maybe that was just me!) Walt was amazing and helped all of us get a nice cast. It was such an amazing feeling once you did get a good cast I did not want to stop because I was afraid I would forget it! He also took the time to answer all of our questions around which flies to use and when and what fly fishing is really about, connecting you to nature and clearing you mind. I know many of us have since been practicing and I can’t wait to catch my first fish with a fly!
Our morning ended with a raffle that included a fly rod from Deerfield Fly Shop in Deerfield MA as well as some great gear from Backcountry.com. We are so thankful for Walt and look forward to getting on the water with him next summer! A huge thank you to all of our partners that made this day possible Fenwick Fishing, Hardy Fly Fishing, Deerfield Fly Shop, Malinda’s Fly and Tackle Shop, Backcountry.com, EcoLips, Treeline Coffee Roasters, Munk Pack, COOLA and Goldthread Herbs.
