On January 14, 2016, over 40 kids from ages 12 – 18 showed up to Backcountry Essentials to get avy-educated! This free event was the first of it’s kind in Bellingham and will not be the last.
As the backcountry gains more and more popularity, might as well get everyone educated, starting with the ones who will grow up testing the limits and venturing out there. We hope to see kids getting after it but first and foremost, being safe! No good day is worth being your last day and NWAC got that point across with a video, slideshow and great interactive presentation.
The Ski Journal provided some great reading material with their new issue for the kids to read and eco lips with SPF chapstick for good, yet protected backcountry days. Thanks to everyone who helped make this free youth initiatives event a success!
Thanks to the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) for providing an awesome instructor who led a shortened beginner avalanche awareness class geared towards the kiddos. The kids had full bellies thanks to Fairhaven Pizza who delivered pizza for 50! And Kate’s Real Food Bars who supplied some good backcoutry bars for later adventures. And of course, thanks to Mt. Baker Ski Area for the two donated lift tickets to help encourage the littles to get out there!
Big thanks to our sponsors!
