On Sunday night, February 11th, ten winter-enthused women gathered at Sturtevant’s in Bellevue for a night of sipping, shopping, and honing their avalanche awareness skills with NWAC. We were so stoked to bring SheJumps events, and especially our popular avalanche awareness nights, to the Eastside area. Our goal was to expand our audience and spread the knowledge of how to stay safe in the backcountry to even more women, and this was a fantastic start!
The night started off with sips and snacks provided by Sturtevant’s and some time for shopping and mingling. Everyone gathered around the screen in their camp chairs once the presentation was ready to begin. The knowledge that the wonderful Brigit Anderson of NWAC brought applied to not just backcountry skiers, but snowboarders, snowshoers, and snowmobilers as well. Topics covered included how to identify avalanche terrain, different types of avalanches and what causes them, best practices for traveling in avalanche terrain, and how best to utilize local resources including www.nwac.us for making safe decisions about backcountry travel. Following the presentation, there was an epic raffle with prizes from Summit at Snoqualmie, Miyar Adventures, Stevens Pass, KIND Bar, Sturtevant’s, and many more wonderful partners.
Many thanks to Andrea with Sturtevant’s for helping get this show on the road and arranging some awesome goody bags, Brigit Anderson with NWAC for spreading the knowledge to keep us safe while having fun, Summit at Snoqualmie, and Miyar Adventures for their support in making this event awesome!
