SheJumps announced its commitment to the Outdoor Industry CEO Diversity Pledge to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion at the core. The evolution of the SheJumps mission as an organization is to increase the participation of all women and girls in outdoor activities. Our programs only touch the surface, and we're aware that not everyone can afford the training to travel safe in the backcountry. We're here to help!
Last season, the 2018-2019 Snowpack Avalanche Scholarship Program provided 23 scholarships with 100% cost covered, and 7 scholarships with 50% cost covered for AIARE courses. SheJumps Washington team ran 3 AIARE Level 1 courses in the Seattle-area: two at Stevens Pass, and one at Mount Rainier between the months of late-January to early-March.
We had 105 applicants, and selected 30 women as recipients. Fifty percent of the women selected for scholarships identified as women of color, and 100% of the women identified as low-income.
We're excited to announce that for the 2019-2020 season we are expanding the program to include Washington, Oregon, and Colorado with 10 scholarship spots per region, meaning 30 AIARE Level 1 spots in total.
The program will be run again by SheJumps Washington volunteers and NWAC. Scholarship funds were donated by Fremont Brewing and K2 Skis.
