Angeli VanLanaan: Living with Lymes Disease and Challenging Herself to Do Something About It!!

LymeLight follows professional freeskier Angeli VanLaanen as she overcomes the complications of living with the chronic illness, “Lyme Disease”. Angeli, just twenty-six years old from Bellingham, Washington is considered one of the top women freeskiers in the world, competing in many high profile events such as the X-Games and having countless photos published in magazines. Most recently, she was featured on the cover of Skiing Magazine's November 2011 issue.

Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection caused by a bite from an infected tick and can develop into complications with the joints, heart and/or nervous system if not treated. Angeli, living with Lyme disease for over 15 years, 14 of which were misdiagnosed, was forced to step back from her professional skiing career to focus on her health. Through strong mental and physical determination, you see Angeli work to overcome her illness and return to her sport of professional freeskiing.

LymeLight serves as an inspirational story for those who have fought to overcome chronic illness and physical setbacks. It delivers a powerful message of the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle on a daily basis.

Portland Chapter of SheJump.org Plans All-Women's Summit!

sj pdx.1

Women’s outdoor non-profit, SheJumps.org, is partnering with national non-profit Big City Mountaineers to summit Mt. Shasta and raise funds for under-resourced youth along the way. On June 8-10, ten women from the Portland chapter of SheJumps will attempt to summit Mt. Shasta, a 14,179-foot peak in northern California, and the second tallest in the Cascade range. Prior to the climb, all members of the Portland SheJumps group will come together to fundraise upwards to $25,000; all of which directly benefits the 300+ youth that Big City Mountaineers serves through wilderness learning programs.

The “jumpers” will climb Mt. Shasta via the West Face, a scenic yet unpopular route. The climb will take them from a trailhead elevation of 7,000 feet to a summit of 14,179 feet in two days. “As in life, the climb will be both challenging and rewarding – one step at a time. The rewards will come not only from our time on the mountain, but also from our contributions to others,” says Laura Grieser, Portland Regional Director. “Both are peak experiences and something that our women are really looking forward to for personal growth and to help those who are less fortunate.”

The money raised by SheJumps PDX prior to their Shasta climb will directly benefit under-resourced Portland youth, as they take their own backcountry expeditions in the Olympic and Gifford Pinchot National Forests. About SheJumps.org

Professional skiers Lynsey Dyer and Vanessa Pierce launched SheJumps in 2007 in Salt Lake City, UT. Under the guidance of executive director Claire Smallwood, SheJumps now has chapters in Colorado, Wyoming, California, and Portland, with plans to expand. The Portland chapter has been well received by the community, growing to 70 members in just one year. The mission of SheJumps, “to increase female participation in outdoor activities by building upon a supportive community that inspires its members to reach their highest potential” blends seamlessly with that of Big City Mountaineers.
